Words Portray our Heart {Grace & Truth}

A few days ago I was reading Proverbs 14-16 in my early morning time with the Lord and I was drawn to how often our mouths/tongues/words/ speech was mentioned.

Here are just a few:

A fools talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them. Pr. 14:3

The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. Pr. 15:2

The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Pr 15:4

A scoundrel plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire. Pr. 16:27

What a visual that last one gives!

My harmful words are like a scorching fire to the one they are said to. Like a red hot iron our disgust or displeasure brand the hearts of others with “not good enough”, “pathetic”, “annoying”, “insignificant” the list goes on.

What an awful heart we portray when we don’t practice discretion and self control with our words. They just bubble up from the inside and give a clear view of what we really are.

The tongue really is an extension of the heart, as Hannah of Shining Stars Magazine says.

Today sometime, I encourage you to read Proverbs 14-16 and circle every time the words tongue, mouth, speech, talk, or any other word that references what comes out of our mouth. Then really think about what comes yours. I know I had a lot to think and pray about.

I also encourage you to go read Hannah’s short article on how to keep our speech god honoring even when it’s hard.

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips”. Psalm 141:3
