Great Books for the Christian Marriage

In the garden, when the enemy weaseled his way between the first marriage union, it caused the hearts in marriage to change forever.

Suddenly, the woman was to be reverent to her husband, honoring him in all she did, and the husband was to be her leader and loyal caretaker.

But, because we have this thing called pride, we all have a really hard time keeping our hearts in line with this divine ordination.

Thankfully, though, we don’t have to flounder about aimlessly in our efforts to honor God through and with our marriage. We have access to many valuable resources that can help us along the way.

Besides the Bible, the books in these lists have, no doubt, transformed our approach to marriage and softened our attitudes toward each other.

So, if you’re looking for a little marriage encouragement, this list is a great place to start.

For Husbands

For each of these books, I have to say, I did not read them, because well… they are for men!

But I can say that the response from my husband during and after the times he was going through these books, was a tremendous blessing and encouragement to both of us.

1. For Men Only

2. Men Who love Fierce Women – The Power of Servant Leadership in Your Marriage

3. Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood

For Wives

In no particular order, each of these books are great tools for seeking guidance and wisdom in your call as a wife.

1. For Women Only

This is a companion to the “For Men Only” book above. It does what it says it will do: give you an inside look into your husband’s mind while giving practical advice and biblical teaching.

2. A Wife’s 40-day Fasting & Prayer Journal – A Guide to Strategic Prayer

This book, written by yours truly, comes alongside the reader with daily devotions, prayers, fasting and Scripture writing.

TRY IT before you buy it – grab a free 28-page sample below.

3. Hope for the Hurting Wife – 30 Days of Encouragement for Your Marriage

4. Fierce Women – The Power of a Soft Warrior

This book is about the beauty of fierceness, about women who use their strength to honor the Lord by honoring their husbands.

5. The Excellent Wife: A Biblical Perspective

This book is a great road map for the wife who desires to put God in the center of her heart and marriage. Martha  Peace goes in depth in a lot of different aspects of a wife’s role, then supplies practical ways to apply what you learned.

6. A Wife After God’s Own Heart: 12 Things That Really Matter in Your Marriage

Elizabeth George delivers another great book. In this one you’ll learn much more than the 12 things promised. I especially enjoyed the “Little Things that Make a Big Differance” section in each chapter.

There is also A Wife After God’s Own Heart Growth and Study Guide available, although I haven’t done it.

7Wives of the Bible: 25 Easy Lessons You Can Learn from These Imperfect Women

This book is loaded with wisdom from twenty-five biblical women who walked the wife challenge long before us and left us with examples on how to rock this wife thing or how to blow it altogether.

For Both Him and Her

1. Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs

2. The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts

This book gave me great insight on how to love my husband the way he needs to be loved, but it also helped me see how I feel most loved.

3. The Love Dare

The Love Dare Day by Day: A Year of Devotions for Couples is also available. This would be an awesome gift to yourself (or ourselves) as a couple!

Once again, besides the Bible, what other Christian marriage books would you add to this list? Tell me in the comments!

Kaylene, I was happy to see that I’ve read a handful of these books and definitely agree that they’d game-changers! I really liked reading “the most important year in a mans/woman’s life” too. It’s a great gift for newlyweds.

Excellent book choices! I found a couple I haven’t read. Our marriages are worth fighting for. My mother recently passed away just a month shy of their 60th anniversary. Their marriage had a big impact on my own. I hope my children will be able to say the same.

Thanks so much for sharing this post, Kaylene! I believe one of the best things we can do for our families is to find ways to bless and strengthen our marriages.

I have read all of the books on your list for women except “Praying for your Husband from Head to Toe”, “Wives of the Bible”, and “For Women Only” (thought I have read another excellent marriage book by Shaunti Feldhahn (there’s a review of it on my blog!). I will definitely need to check these out.

Thanks for your continued encouragement to cultivate the best marriages possible.

    Blessings to you and yours!

“The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands” definitely belongs on this list! I read it recently and it has completely changed my marriage! I think it’s going to be included in all future wedding gifts I give. It’s an easy read and it includes lots of Bible references paired with relatable examples. I can’t recommend it enough!
