A Prayer for the Words Your Child Speaks

Father, Your Word tells us where there are many words, sin is not absent. I pray You would make my child aware of what comes out of his/her mouth, giving them discretion to weigh their thoughts before any words are spoken. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of their mouths, but only what is helpful to all who hear (Ephesians 4:29). Help them shy away from obscene language, course joking and foolish talk (Ephesians 5:4). Should they be tempted to indulge in reckless, unchecked words, restrain them with the reminder that the one “who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity (Proverbs 21:23).

Father, along with discretion, I pray You would embolden each child to speak the truth in love even when it is hard. Should they cause any harm by the words they have spoken, supply them the courage and humility to seek reconciliation.

Father, when they don’t know what to say or how to express themselves appropriately, strengthen them with peace, calming them to verbalize their deepest thoughts and struggles.

Lastly, Father, I pray You would place a guard upon my children’s lips and renew their hearts and minds so the words of their mouths and the meditations of their hearts may be pleasing to You, oh Lord (Psalm 19:14). In Jesus’ name, Amen.
